WANT A JOB AT GRADUATION?

Class of 2011: More Than Half of Internships Were Paid

More than half of the internships undertaken by the college Class of 2011 were paid, according to results of NACE’s 2011 Student Survey.
Among the 20,000 graduating seniors taking part in the survey, 52.5 percent reported having taken part in an internship at some point in their college career, and more than half of those (52 percent) were paid. 

62 percent—were interested in working full time for their internship employer, regardless of whether they were actually paid as interns.
Interestingly, the type of work they did as interns had a bigger effect than pay on their interest in working for their intern employer: The more time they spent on professional-level work, the more likely they were to want to work for the employer full time following graduation.

Pay, however, does appear to correlate to the student’s ability to get a job offer. More than 61 percent of students who did a paid internship in the for-profit sector had a job offer at the time of graduation. In comparison, approximately 38 percent of students performing an unpaid internship in the for-profit sector had a job offer, and just one-third of students who did not have any type of internship experience had a job offer.
Possibly accounting for the difference: the type of work the paid intern does compared to the unpaid intern. Among respondents to the survey, paid interns spent more time on professional tasks while unpaid interns were more likely to perform clerical work. As a result, the paid intern may offer employers more of the type of experience they’re seeking in their new hires.

particularly need help Saturday's 6-11pm. We need like 3 or 4 people  that would be good "bouncers" to keep everyone in line. (We pay
$50/night) We never have much for problems because if there are enough

2012 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program - Deadline: November

The United States Department of State is pleased to announce the
scholarship competition for the 2012 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)
Program for overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen
critical need foreign languages. CLS institutes provide fully-funded
group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural
enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen
undergraduate and graduate students. Students may apply for one
language, and will be placed at institute sites based on language
evaluations after selection.
Languages offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi,
Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and
Urdu.
Interested applicants should review the full eligibility and

Students from all academic disciplines, including business,

The Institute for Humane Studies offers scholarships of up to $15,000 and paid public policy and journalism internships for students and recent graduates who support individual liberty, free markets, and peace.
Our journalism internship program places students at news organizations, such as The Daily Caller and MSNBC. Through our public policy internship program, students can gain experience with the legislative process and influencing policy. All interns receive a stipend plus housing and travel assistance and receive career skills training.

Greetings: You tell me you like my “stories” so ok, here’s another one.
 HOW FLUNKING OUT OF SCHOOL MADE MY LIFE PERFECT. I, er, didn’t finish school. Not high school anyway. Went into Grade 8 (in Montreal) with a scholarship. Skinny, knock-kneed freckled red-head, bright as a button. Well, two weeks in, I heard “the big kids” talking about preparing for their French Oral Presentation. They had to give one in order to graduate. Well, no way I was going to speak in public. Didn’t matter French or English. Could probably have pulled it off in Yiddish with a bit if help (I was Irish Protestant. But that’s another story) Anyway, no way. No public speaking for me. Uh, uh. Not going to happen. So, I went to my teacher, Mrs. McCarthy, and explained that I couldn’t give an oral presentation in front of people, it didn’t matter French or English, so could I just give it in front of her and she wanted to know what the heck I was talking about and I explained that the “big kids” said that a person couldn’t graduate in Quebec at that time without giving a French Oral Presentation in Grade 11. She stared over her scary ½ glasses at me and said, “You’ve been in grade 8 for two weeks. Grade 11 is a long way off and no, you can’t just give the presentation to one person, you aren’t special, you have to do it like everyone else.”
OK, then. I went to the Guidance Counselor. How would I even know to do that, I have no idea. I told her my story and explained that I couldn’t give an oral presentation in front of people, it didn’t matter French or English, so could I just give it in front of her and she wanted to know what the heck I was talking about and I explained that the “big kids” said that a person couldn’t graduate in Quebec at that time without giving a French Oral Presentation in Grade 11.  And she said: , “You’ve been in grade 8 for two weeks. So, skinny, freckle-faced, ballsy little kid that I was, I go to the principal. Spelled with “pal” ‘cause he’s your “pal.” Yeah, right. Mr. Unsworth. He always wore his black academic robes, fluttered down the halls like the angel of death. Anyway…I did it. I went to his office and asked to speak to him which must have amused him no end. And I told him my story and explained that I couldn’t give an oral presentation in front of people, it didn’t matter French or English, so could I just give it in front of him and he wanted to know what the heck I was talking about and I explained that the “big kids” said that a person couldn’t graduate in Quebec at that time without giving a French Oral Presentation in Grade 11. And he said: “You’ve been in grade 8 for two weeks. Grade 11 is a long way off and no, you can’t just give the presentation to one person, you aren’t special, you have to do it like everyone else.”  Honestly – almost word for word. Was there a script for this in the school handbook?
So, there it lay. I was done. No use doing well, or even showing up for classes if I couldn’t graduate anyway, ‘cause I was not doing that presentation in front of people. Every time I got hauled into the Guidance Counselor or the Vice Principal’s office, or Parents’ Night or whatever, they asked the same question. What the heck was the matter with me? I was so bright, but I ‘just didn’t apply myself’…and I was always honest and forthright and explained that I couldn’t give an oral presentation in front of people, it didn’t matter French or English, so could I just give it in front of them and they wanted to know what the heck I was talking about and I explained that the “big kids” said that a person couldn’t graduate in Quebec at that time without giving a French Oral Presentation in Grade 11. And it always got a weird look, and a dismissive comment and on and on we went. Two years and two summer schools for Grade 9, two years and one summer school for grade 10. Oh…highest SAT scores ever recorded for the school. I was actually in the principal’s office when he took a dressing down from the School Board dudes for “losing this student.” And this guy said I didn’t have to do that oral presentation in front of people; they’d work something out and well, I was a teenager now, and had a job at Woolworth’s candy counter so who needs this and I just quit.
I got “good jobs” for the times – legal secretary, that was the top you could hope for. That and marrying some guy who had a job with Bell Canada or the railway. My boyfriend was a college guy, BMOC actually, and we were at a party and people were talking about their majors and their classes and their cool new jobs and someone said to me, “…and what do you do?” And I said, “nothing.” And they walked away.  I swore I would never give ‘nothing’ for an answer to anything again! I signed up for night school: I was going Monday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Thursday night (no night school Fridays) and Saturday morning. And someone said, how old are you and I said, I’d be 21 in a couple of weeks and they told me that I don’t need to finish the classes - once you are 21 you can write a special university entrance exam in Quebec and if you make it – you’re in. So I did. And I passed. And I signed up for Philosophy 101 – the only class not full, and there were 200+ students in the class and the professor asked if there were any questions and I had one and everyone laughed at me, and I never went back for a full decade.
So I became the first female tractor trailer driver in Quebec. $100 a week as a secretary/$100 a day as a truck driver. Women’s lib didn’t have so much influence as that. But that’s a tough job. So now, I am 31, divorced, two kids, feeling lower than whatever. Really low. So I walked across the park to the University that was right there and signed up for a class. French. Why not. Got an “A.” Felt some self-esteem come back. Took another one. Another “A.” Felt even better. Hmm wonder what the heck I could pull off in English? Well 7 years later, I had a Master of Arts in Stylistics (Linguistics and Literature) and was a newly minted professor of Shakespeare and had a reputation of being a cracker jack Avant Garde Poetics critic in Montreal! “Poetics” mind you, not just a poetry critic, but the “expert” behind the stuff behind the stuff. Imagine! The intellectual of the intellectual! I felt lucky I could even spell Avant Garde!  I believe that would qualify for culture shock.
Well, once again, there was no Career Development counselor with any imagination to help me look at other possible ‘areas of interest,’  so I stayed with teaching English at University and College level. But, ADDer that I am, teaching the same thing all the time was death to me, and I was always nosey and asking the students what was up and I always ended up counseling in career development areas and finally – taaa daaa – here I am, at 64, a pretty decent Director of Career Development, and I do say that because I worked really hard to be that – mainly because I never had a “me” like me who would listen when people have a “story.”  And what else do I do? Oh, yeah, I teach Effective Speaking!  Why? Because I can.  Because I “get it.” Because I understand how awful it is to be that afraid. And to date, my favourite thing in life to do is motivational speaking. In front of large groups. Go figure. Try to tell as many people as I can the “truth” as I see it, so it might help them. So, what would I say to a student? Find out what scares you the most. What is the thing that is just crunching you to the ground, grinding you in the dirt, giving you night sweats and take a really, really good look at it. It may be the one thing that will bring the most joy to your life. Trust me. I don’t know why, but it kind of follows with what I’ve said in a previous OG about finding the person you like the least and taking them to lunch. You will probably learn more from them that anyone else you ever meet and save yourself literally years of self-help stuff. No, I don’t know why the “backwards” stuff works. It just does. Or at least it does now that I am actually looking backwards. Might save you some time.

The general nature or purpose of the job:
The Assistant Director for External Relations will lead the Career Center’s efforts to develop new and cultivate existing partnerships with alumni and parents. The position will manage internal relationships with key university professionals including various alumni and development offices and parents programs, establish and manage alumni recruiting teams at various key organizations and coordinate volunteers for current and future career center programs and events.
 
The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:
Responsibilities include developing strategic partnerships with alumni, parents, students, and university professionals; coordinating key existing educational programs including alumni mock interview week and planning future career educational programs; identifying and contacting key alumni and parents to assist with recruiting; corresponding with alumni and parent referrals who desire to engage in the career development of Hopkins Arts and Sciences and Engineering students; cultivating campus and community partnerships in support of students and their career goals including many different alumni and development offices. The position will also monitor the success of specific initiatives including tracking participation and outcomes. In addition, the position will participate in annual reviews of policies and programs, proposing new initiatives and improving current offerings. QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Student Personnel Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Development, or a related discipline desired. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
 
Special skills and knowledge:
Experience in coordinating volunteers and events or working with alumni is ideal. Knowledge of recruiting management systems (e.g. - Symplicity, eRecruiting, etc.); Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal); ability to effectively present information to groups ranging in size from 3 to 100; ability to manage complex projects and programs; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to work in a team environment; ability to establish priorities, make independent decisions, and use sound judgment; strong customer service orientation. Ability to build relationships with diverse constituencies (students, alumni, faculty and employers). Willingness to travel.
 
Related work experience:
Five years related experience required.

HEY CHECK OUT THE IDEA OF A SUCCESS PORTFOLIO

  • Interview a Customer. Hardly any job seekers will do this because it may require some effort. As you prepare for the interview, check the organization’s website and find some of their customers. Find one or two and call them up or arrange to go see them. Then ask them some questions about your would-be employer. If you’re lucky, you’ll get someone who will share quite a bit of information, which you can use strategically in the interview. They’ll be sure to ask you what you know about the company or why you want to work there. Then you share some of what you heard and learned from the customer. ”Without a doubt that will make the person memorable… head and shoulders above everyone else,” Jennings said.
  • Use Great Terms and Your Limbs. Think about how you are going to contribute to the employer’s success right away. Then use the term “contribute” as you link your previous experience to the current job’s needs. Other terms that can be grabbers: enthusiastic, energy, energized, success, and whatever are the essential traits and tools valued by your future employer. Also remember: “Have a smile on your face,” said Jennings, who noted that many candidates are too stressed or nervous to show their positive energy. “Then mimic the body language of the person interviewing you. If they’re leaning forward, you go ahead, too.”
  • Bring on Your Success Portfolio. This records all the examples of your success and achievement, whether they’re in volunteer or community groups or in your graduate classes. Students may use sports and clubs to document their team-building and other traits, Jennings says. They could include notes from professors or a copy of their project for an important class. Adults may have awards they won from their employer or thank yous or appreciations from clients. ”When you have this in your portfolio, you have credibility,” said Jennings. “You’re showing you can market yourself.”

LinkedIn, a social networking website for professionals, has rapidly taken off since its founding in 2003, with the company now boasting over 100 million users and over $160 million in annual revenues. Just as Facebook became the platform on which we interact with our friends, LinkedIn is becoming the platform on which we interact with contacts and companies. People of all ages are realizing the wealth of potential and opportunity awaiting them on the website, and flocking to start their own accounts. With one’s experience, education, recommendations, contact information, and just about everything else conveniently listed on one’s page, it only takes a quick profile look-up from HR to find everything they need to know about an applicant. Perhaps in the future, LinkedIn may even go beyond allowing users to simply submit applications to posted jobs, building tools and services (like video chat, applicant evaluation software, etc) onto its platform to allow for the entire hiring process to take place on its website. With the company’s continued sustained growth and innovation, it is likely that this will usurp the traditional resume.

It has become relatively easy in this day and age to create high-quality homemade videos. Video cameras (or phones) and simple-to-use editing software are everywhere, and uploading content to the web is a breeze. A video resume allows an applicant to present himself or herself in more dimensions to a recruiter by showcasing creativity, personality, and interests while still communicating qualifications and experience. Additionally, the visual presence of the applicant allows him or her to speak more directly to a recruiter than any cover letter could ever allow, making for a more compelling personal pitch. This format has already started to become more prevalent: for example, Cambridge-based tech start-up SCVNGR now accepts videos in lieu of a cover letter. There are even companies, like TalentRooster, which specialize in producing such videos for hopeful hires who would otherwise produce something laughable, like this. Or awesomely ambiguous, like this.
Personal Pages
With more people embracing personal branding and establishing their presence on the web, it becomes important to tie all their outlets together. Recruiters don’t just want to see a resume anymore; they want to learn about your opinions, values, and personality, which they can extract from your online activity. Whether it’s a WordPress blog, YouTube account, or a Twitter handle, every digital footprint left generates exposure and adds value to an individual’s personal brand. A personal page aggregates everything into one convenient location for a recruiter to look through. Additionally, like video resumes, a personal page allows you to add creativity and a visual presence in a way a traditional resume cannot. Such sites are quite easy to set up: building a solid fan page on Facebook or a splash page on About.Me or Flavors.Me can be completed in less than half an hour. For those willing to go the extra mile and spend a little cash, purchasing themes, domain names, and outside help can help add a little flair.
The death of the email attachment resume is fast approaching. Thanks to the web, applicants no longer have to submit anything beyond their basic information, for a plethora of information about them is already readily available online and Google-able. It’s not hard to imagine a future job application reduced simply to this
